It is 'inevitable' that Russia will strike Britain 'and wipe it off the earth' with missiles in revenge for Storm Shadow attacks, Putin hardliner MP warns

A hardline Russian MP has warned that it is 'inevitable' that Russia will strike Britain directly with missiles to wipe it off the Earth.
Andrey Gurulev, a reservist general and pro-Putin MP, insisted that the Kremlin would avenge the Ukrainian use of British Storm Shadow missiles against his country.
He told Kremlin-controlled state television: 'There's still going to come a point where we're going to strike. It is inevitable.
'The question is simply a matter of time and decision-making. And there is no other way.
'If today Britain is hitting our territory with its missiles from Ukraine, everyone realises that they will not fly anywhere without NATO control systems and satellite navigation.
The Russian defence ministry claims six Storm Shadows were fired at Bryansk region on Tuesday alone as part of Ukraine's largest aerial bombardment of the war on Vladimir Putin's territory. Moscow claimed the £2 million missiles were shot down.
Another two Storm Shadows were shot down over the Black Sea, it was alleged.
Today's Russian onslaught on Ukraine is seen as revenge for the strikes a day earlier which hit chemical plants and fuel facilities.
But Gurulev said Putin would ultimately strike directly on Britain.

'I believe that this is a direct reason for Britain to simply not be on Earth,' he said.
'And I'm not the only one who thinks that, we're not the only ones who think that.
'I think 80 per cent of the world will clap for us. That's 100 per cent.'
TV propagandists have previously suggested using Putin's new Satan-2 missile - known to the Russians as Sarmat - to obliterate Britain.
This is a 208-ton intercontinental silo-launched 15,880mph hypersonic nuclear missile, the size of a 14-storey tower block.
It is supposedly deployed with the Russian nuclear forces.
Bryansk region was also hit with half a dozen US-supplied ATACMS missiles, according to the Russians.
Earlier this week Gurulev mooted Putin and Donald Trump carving up Greenland - getting half of the territory each.
He also forecast Russian seizing Spitsbergen, a Norwegian island in the Arctic where military operations are banned, and use it as a defence stronghold.

Russia launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine on Wednesday, forcing the country to introduce preventive power cuts, the Ukrainian energy minister said.
'The enemy continues to terrorize Ukrainians,' Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook, urging residents to stay in shelters during the ongoing threat and follow official updates.
The state energy company Ukrenergo reported emergency power outages in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad regions.
Russian forces launched missile strikes targeting energy infrastructure in the western Lviv region early Wednesday, said the city's mayor, Andrii Sadovyi.
'During the morning attack, enemy cruise missiles were recorded in the region,' he said.
No casualties or damage were reported.
'The enemy attacked the energy infrastructure of our region and Ukraine,' Andriy Sadovyi wrote on social media.
'Emergency shutdowns have been introduced in 6 regions, but Lviv is not on this list yet.'

NATO warplanes are scrambled as Putin launches huge attack near Poland border
NATO scrambled its warplanes early today in response to a fierce Russian bombardment of Ukraine close to its border with Poland.
The Russian strikes - hitting vital energy facilities in the coldest weeks of winter - were led by Vladimir Putin's Tu-22 and Tu-95 strategic bombers.
The onslaught was seen as instant revenge for Tuesday's Ukrainian aerial strikes on Russia, the heaviest of the almost three year war.
In particular, Putin was rattled by Ukraine's use of British Storm Shadow and American ATACMS missiles which hit key defence facilities including a chemical plant in Bryansk region.
NATO forces went on full alert in Poland with warplanes scrambled, the country's operational command headquarters said.
'Duty fighter pairs have been scrambled, and the ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest state of readiness,' said a statement.
'The steps taken are aimed at ensuring security in the areas bordering the threatened areas.'
President Zelensky described it as 'another massive Russian attack' and said Putin's forces had continued to focus their attacks on his country's energy infrastructure as Ukrainians face the harsh winter cold.

'Among their objectives were gas and energy facilities that sustain normal life for our people,' he said.
He added that more than 40 missiles had been launched in the attack, including ballistic missiles. At least 30 of these were destroyed, he said.
Additionally, more than 70 Russian attack drones were launched during the night.
Zelensky issued an appeal to Ukraine's western allies to rapidly shore up its air defences, stating that 'promises made by partners at the NATO summit in Washington... still remain partially unfulfilled.'
Andriy Sadovyi, mayor of the western city of Lviv, said that 'during the morning attack, enemy cruise missiles were recorded on the territory of the region.'
Some seven TU-22M3 and six TU-95MS strategic bombers were in the air with the Ukrainian capital Kyiv among the targets.
Russia had earlier vowed to respond to Tuesday's attacks when a reported 14 Western missiles and more than 200 drones hit chemical plants, energy facilities and other defence-related targets in Russia in Ukraine's most ambitious aerial strike of the entire war.
'The actions by the Kyiv regime supported by Western handlers will trigger retaliation,' said the Russian defence ministry in a statement.
Russia claimed to have shot down eight £2million Storm Shadow missiles but this could not be verified.
Today Russia attacked with Kh-22 missiles, triggering emergency power outages in multiple Ukrainian regions, already hit by crippling electricity shortages due to earlier Putin strikes.
Sea-launched Kalibr missiles were also deployed. Gas facilities were also hit.
Herman Halushchenko, Kyiv's Energy Minister, warned: 'The enemy does not stop terrorising Ukrainians.
'Due to the mass attack, the operator of the transmission system applies preventive measures of restrictions.
'Stay tuned for official announcements. While the danger lasts - stay in shelters!'
Svitlana Onishchuk, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk military administration, said: 'The morning in Ukraine began with rocket fire.
'The enemy used various types of weapons.
'In the Carpathian region, the target was critical infrastructure facilities. Air Defence Forces were operating in the region.

Ukraine also hit Russia overnight, setting fire to a key Lukoil refinery in Volgograd.
Footage showed a huge explosion at the strategic plant.

NATO launches 'Baltic Sentry' to increase critical infrastructure security
NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte co-hosted a Summit of Baltic Sea Allies on Tuesday (14 January 2025), along with President Alexander Stubb of Finland and Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia.

At the meeting in Helsinki, Mr Rutte announced the launch of a new military activity by NATO to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. “Baltic Sentry” will enhance NATO’s military presence in the Baltic Sea and improve Allies’ ability to respond to destabilizing acts.
At the Summit, leaders from across the region addressed the growing threat to critical undersea infrastructure. The Secretary General said recent sabotage had damaged energy and communication cables, but he was confident that, “by working together with all Allies – we will do what it takes to ensure the safety and security not only of our critical infrastructure but of all that we hold dear.”
“Baltic Sentry” will involve a range of assets, including frigates and maritime patrol aircraft. The Secretary General also announced the deployment of new technologies, including a small fleet of naval drones, and highlighted that NATO will work with Allies to integrate national surveillance assets – all to improve the ability to protect critical undersea infrastructure and respond if required. NATO will work within the Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network, which includes industry, to explore further ways to protect infrastructure and improve resilience of underwater assets.
Mr Rutte also stressed the importance of robust enforcement. He highlighted how Finland has demonstrated that firm action within the law is possible, “Ship captains must understand that potential threats to our infrastructure will have consequences, including possible boarding, impounding, and arrest.”
For more information about Baltic Sentry, see the news release from NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).
Allies participating in the Summit signed a joint declaration, the text of which is available here.

Joint Statement of the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit

President of Finland Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal, Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson have issued a joint statement in the presence of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Henna Virkkunen at the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit in Helsinki on Tuesday 14 January 2025.

We, the Heads of State or Government of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden, have met today in Helsinki, in the presence of the Secretary General of NATO and the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, to address the recent increase in serious incidents damaging critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
We are deeply concerned by actions, be they negligent or malicious, which cause damage to or threaten the functioning of critical undersea infrastructure. We strongly condemn acts of sabotage to critical undersea infrastructure.
We are determined to deter, detect and counter any attempts at sabotage. Any attack against our infrastructure will be met with a robust and determined response. We stand ready to attribute hostile actions committed by malign actors, as appropriate.
We welcome that NATO has launched the enhanced Vigilance Activity “Baltic Sentry” to improve situational awareness and deter hostile activities. We welcome the efforts of Allies to deploy additional assets at sea, in the air, on land and below the surface of the sea, to enhance vigilance and deterrence. The Commander Task Force-Baltic in Rostock has been activated and coordinates Allied ships in the Baltic Sea. NATO´s Maritime Centre for the Security of Critical Undersea Infrastructure and NATO´s Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network will support efforts to protect and secure vital undersea assets.
Moreover, the involved nations are coordinating the employment of different options and assets. As an example, the Commander Task Force-Baltic works towards establishing an integrated regional picture on critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea that contributes to NATO’s work in protecting critical undersea infrastructure.
We continue to strengthen our deterrence and defence, modernise our capabilities, recognising the urgent need for increased defence expenditure to address and counter evolving security threats.
We will work, including within the NATO framework, to begin deploying innovative solutions, developing new technologies for surveillance and tracking of suspicious vessels and undersea monitoring. This will include enhanced partnerships with the private sector, in particular infrastructure operators and cutting-edge technology companies. We will actively exchange information, track and assess incidents to analyse trends, and share best practices of our response.
We remain prepared to act individually and collectively to protect our critical undersea infrastructure and increase resilience, including by building on and expanding the existing NATO-EU cooperation. We welcome additional measures undertaken by Allies and partners to strengthen security in our region, which reinforce existing and planned NATO responses.
Together, we will identify further measures in accordance with international law of the sea, including the freedom of navigation, to prevent and effectively respond to willful damaging of critical undersea infrastructure or irresponsible behaviour. Such behaviour interferes, inter alia, with the freedom to lay cables and pipelines and poses a significant risk to the marine environment. We will also take actions for accountability and stronger enforcement against those responsible for damaging undersea infrastructure, including compensation for damage.
We will take further steps to enhance resilience of our communications network and energy infrastructure, including reliable supply chains, enhancing physical and cybersecurity measures, developing European undersea surveillance capabilities and swift repair capacity, engaging with the private sector. We will work towards a Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Infrastructure Protection in the region.
Combatting breakage of undersea cables and pipelines represents a global problem. We urge all States to adhere to their obligations to adopt laws and regulations necessary to provide that the breaking of or injury to a cable or pipeline in the high seas or exclusive economic zones by a ship flying their flag or by a person subject to their jurisdiction shall be a punishable offence, and to prosecute as appropriate.
Russia´s use of the so-called shadow fleet poses a particular threat to the maritime and environmental security in the Baltic Sea region and globally. This reprehensible practice also threatens the integrity of undersea infrastructure, increases risks connected to sea-dumped chemical munitions, and significantly supports funding of Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
We are taking robust steps to address these threats. We reserve our rights, in accordance with international law, to take action against any suspected vessels that circumvent sanctions and threaten our security, infrastructure and the environment. In close coastal state co-operation, we are increasing surveillance of the vessels, including the inspections of vessel insurance certificates. Additionally, further measures, including the introduction of tracking tools and the extension of sanctions targeting the shadow fleet, will be put into practice. We encourage further EU-NATO cooperation in responding to the threats caused by the reckless activities of vessels serving Russian cargo flow.
Increasing the security of the Baltic Sea and its critical undersea infrastructure is a joint interest for the Alliance and the EU. Through our joint actions, as outlined in this declaration, we actively contribute to efforts to secure and safeguard our undersea critical infrastructure, thereby strengthening NATO’s collective efforts and advancing NATO’s ongoing work, including the renewal of NATO’s maritime strategy, as we approach the NATO Summit in the Hague.
Hostile or reckless actions against critical undersea infrastructure or other critical infrastructure are not limited to the Baltic Sea region. We will ensure coherence and coordination and intensify cooperation to strengthen security in the whole Alliance.

Germany tells troops to shoot down drones on sight after wave of suspicious UAVs was seen over military sites amid hybrid war with Russia

The German cabinet has agreed plans to allow the army to shoot down suspicious drones after several sightings over military sites, the government announced today, as Russia is accused of waging a 'hybrid war' against the West.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that 'especially since Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine, we have seen that drones are being used more and more frequently, which poses an increasing challenge for the police and their current technology.'
The ministry said that 'security services have noted that reports of sightings of uncooperative drones over critical infrastructure and military properties in Germany are increasing.'
'Espionage or sabotage are regularly considered as a possible reason,' it added in a statement, as tensions between Moscow and Berlin continue to run high.
Under current regulations, soldiers can assist the police in forcing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to change direction or land, threaten to shoot it down or fire warning shots.
But under the new proposals, a drone could be shot down by the army if it is believed the device is being 'used against the lives of people or against a critical facility, and the use of armed force is the only means of averting this present danger', the ministry said.
Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over several military bases and other sensitive sites in Germany in recent months, at a time when the country is on high alert for Russian espionage.
Police in the southern state of Bavaria this week said they were looking into several incidents in which drones had flown over military installations in Manching and Neuburg an der Donau.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is pictured on January 15 hosting a video conference meeting

A Russian drone flies in the sky over Kyiv following a missile strike on the city in November

The Manching site hosts a military aerodrome and is where the Eurofighter jet is developed by Airbus.
Several drones have also recently been spotted at an industrial zone near the North Sea and near the US airbase in Ramstein.
The changes must still be voted through in the lower and upper houses of parliament before becoming law.
Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in October that Moscow was using 'hybrid means' to target Germany, adding: 'We see many, many examples, time and again.'
She cited drone activity around the new gas terminals, suggesting they were 'not there to observe the beautiful local landscape, but because there is a chemical park there and a... storage facility for nuclear waste nearby,'
According to German media reports, the reconnaissance was carried out by unmanned Russian military aircraft. Officials warned the scouting could be 'for the purposes of sabotage'.
It comes as Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk today warned that Russia had planned acts of 'air terror' against airlines worldwide, accusing Moscow of staging sabotage and diversion on Polish soil and beyond.

Members of the Ukrainian police investigate a crater following a strike on the village of Sknyliv, some 60km from Lviv, on January 15

'All I can say, and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these fears, is that Russia has been planning acts of air terror, and not only against Poland, but against airlines all over the world,' Tusk told reporters.
Russian spies were accused of sending a package full of erotic gadgets to DHL depots in Britain and Germany last year in an alleged 'test-run' for a larger attack on a US-bound flight.
Two incendiary devices had been shipped via a DHL logistics centre on July 22 from Lithuania to Birmingham, England, and Leipzig, Germany, resulting in a fire.
It was later revealed the explosives were hidden in a box containing sex toys and massage pillows.
Moscow has also been accused of jamming satellite systems for civilian air flights with state of the art technology.
The Kremlin has been accused of trying to undermine European interests over their backing of Kyiv and sharp sanctions on Moscow since the war in Ukraine began almost three years ago.
In August, Russia was accused of flying multiple drones over Germany to collect sensitive information on a nuclear power plant. Germany decommissioned the last of its nuclear power plants in 2023 after years of fierce debate.
Intelligence officers blamed Russia, telling Bild drones were scouting over Brunsbütte as a potential target for sabotage.

Pictured: A fire ignited at a plant in Berlin containing poisonous sulphuric acid and copper cyanide that is reportedly linked to missiles supplied to Ukraine

In July, US intelligence uncovered a plot they believe shows Russian intent to sponsor a series of assassinations of defence industry executives across Europe, including Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, a staunch supporter of Ukraine.
A top German official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US, and western officials said the Papperger plot was the most far along.
Rheinmetall is the top German manufacturer of 155mm artillery shells used by Ukraine to deter the Russian advance. The company was on the brink of opening a new plant within Ukraine tasked with producing armoured vehicles as news of the foiled plot broke.
Baerbock said Russia was waging a hybrid war of aggression, including cyberattacks and sabotage of infrastructure.
'This underlines once again that we as Europeans must protect ourselves as best we can and not be naïve,' she said.
'Russia's intensifying campaign of subversion is something that we are taking extremely seriously and have been intently focused on over the past few months,' National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson told CNN at the time.
'The United States has been discussing this issue with our NATO Allies, and we are actively working together to expose and disrupt these activities,' she said, reiterating support for Ukraine in the face of destabilisation efforts.
Russia has been accused of trying to destabilise Ukraine's allies since the war in Ukraine began.
Moscow also allegedly upped its subversive activities after Biden relaxed rules on Ukraine firing long-range missiles into Russia.
The hybrid warfare tactics they are alleged to have engaged in include the 'weaponising mass migration' along the EU's western border.
Western leaders accused Russia of sabotaging vital cables in the Baltic in November, and have repeatedly accused Russia of sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines which provide Europe with gas.
There have also been accusations that Russia has influenced elections in Moldova and Georgia.

Russia 'has been planning acts of air terror against airlines all over the world', Polish leader warns amid growing fears Putin is plotting an atrocity in the West

Russia has been planning acts of 'air terror' against airlines worldwide, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sensationally claimed today as he met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Warsaw.
Mr Tusk accused Moscow of staging sabotage and diversion on Polish soil and beyond.
'All I can say, and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these fears, is that Russia has been planning acts of air terror, and not only against Poland, but against airlines all over the world,' Tusk told reporters.
It comes just weeks after Russia was accused of shooting down an Azerbaijan Airlines plane over its soil, before the plane crash landed in Kazakhstan, killing 83.
Government sources blamed Russia but said they did not think it was done on purpose.
Ten years ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was also shot down over eastern Ukraine in territory controlled by Russian and Russia-led forces, killing 298, including 80 children. A Joint Investigation Team found that the plane was hit by a Russian missile from the Russian 53rd Anti-aircraft Brigade.
Counter-terrorism police were last year said to be investigating suspected Russian involvement in the planting of a hidden incendiary device in a parcel on a plane headed for Britain.
The device burst into flames at a warehouse and no injuries were reported, but investigators believe there could have been far more serious consequences had it ignited while in flight.
The allegation comes amid growing fears Putin could be plotting to use 'hybrid warfare' to undermine Ukraine's backers in the West.
Defence officials warned in November that Europe remains 'totally unprepared' to deal with such threats, lacking the resources to effectively counter sabotage, arson, assassination and attacks on infrastructure.

A former senior European official told the Guardian said Europe could expect more 'hybrid' attacks to unfold on the continent in the wake of the American decision to permit usage of long-range ATACMS missiles against targets deep inside Russia.
Russia has been accused of trying to destabilise the West and allies since the war in Ukraine began by allegedly 'weaponising mass migration' along its western border; sabotaging Nord Stream pipelines providing Europe with gas; influencing elections in Moldova and Georgia; jamming aircraft GPS; and even sending exploding sex toys to Western Europe.
The cutting of crucial underseas telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea in November generated outrage and stark warnings about Russia's ability to allegedly interfere in European affairs.
A 135-mile internet link between Lithuania and Sweden's Gotland Island went out of service, according to a local supplier, before a 745-mile cable running from Helsinki to Rostock, Germany went offline.
Finland and Germany said in a joint statement that they were investigating 'an incident (that) immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage' before European ministers put together a joint statement blaming Russia on Tuesday.
UK and EU ministers said Russia's hybrid attacks were 'escalating' and 'unprecedented' in scale, posing security risks.
The German cabinet has since agreed plans to allow the army to shoot down suspicious drones after several sightings over military sites.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that 'especially since Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine, we have seen that drones are being used more and more frequently, which poses an increasing challenge for the police and their current technology.'

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk shake hands in Warsaw today

Poland, with a deeply scarred history with Russia, made overtures to redressing historic tensions with Ukraine today as Donald Tusk stood defiant against the perceived threat from Moscow.
Speaking at a press conference at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister in Warsaw today, Tusk vowed to use his country's presidency of the EU to push forward with Ukraine's membership quest.
'We will break the standstill we have in this issue,' Tusk told reporters in Warsaw, as he stood alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 'We will accelerate the accession process.'

Russia must be ready for World War Three within three years, pro-Putin MP declares

Russia must be ready for World War Three within three years, a pro-Putin MP has warned in the latest grave threat to Ukraine's western allies.
Aleksey Zhuravlyov, deputy head of Russia’s parliamentary defence committee, urged that while Russia has enough volunteers to fight, it must start to prepare the male population for a major confrontation with the West by 2028-29.
'Europe explains to us that in 2028–2029 [it and its allies] will be ready to fight Russia,' he assessed. 'Here it is necessary to prepare the male population and, naturally, defend the Motherland. We must talk about this and not be ashamed of it.'
Responding to the comments, Yuri Shvytkin, deputy chair of the State Duma Defence Committee, firmly agreed with the assessment, telling Ridus that 'every Russian must understand that in the event of external aggression, he must take up arms and defend the Motherland.'
He shied away from calling for immediate mobilisation, suggesting the threat was not yet a pressing issue.

Senior Russian MP Aleksey Zhuravlyov, deputy head of the parliamentary defence committee

War-mongering nationalist politician Zhuravlyov, 62, an MP for the nationalist so-called Liberal Democratic Party and a TV propagandist, is under Western sanctions for supporting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has significantly expanded its military in the last 12 months, a move checked by Ukraine and its western allies.
Russia was able to boost the size of its army to 1.5 million active personnel in September 2024, making it the second largest in the world, per Russia media.
But the war in Ukraine has had an enormous toll on Russia's manpower.
In a release published on January 2, 2025, Ukraine's Defence Ministry assessed that Russia had suffered 430,790 casualties - deaths and wounded - in 2024.
In November, the WSJ reported that Russia had lost some 200,000 soldiers to the conflict so far.
U.S. President Joe Biden's administration urged Ukraine to lower its age of conscription from 25 to 18 in November in order to boost the size of its military and stay in the fight with Russia.
Europe has also responded to the perceived growing threat on its border by summoning more troops of its own.
A report by Der Spiegel in the summer said as many as 800,000 NATO soldiers from the security bloc could be hosted by Germany as they transit to posts further East.
Military chiefs in Britain were last year also planning the biggest mass mobilisation of reservists in 20 years, a move intended to test the 'deployment readiness' of more than 10,000 men.
Poland has been massively investing in its military since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, last year offering military training programmes for civilians to maximise combat readiness.
Putin has played up to his MP's recurring threats of impending Armageddon.
The Russian dictator said in late December that a global conflict could erupt if the West continues 'escalating the situation'.
You know, there is no need to scare anyone,' he told a state TV reporter, caveating, 'there are many dangers - they are increasing'.
'And we see what our enemy is doing today, escalating the situation. If they want to, let them live badly, let them escalate further.
'We will always respond to any challenge, always,' he said.
Putin glossed over his role in escalating conflict in Europe with the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, instead boasting of his personal role in the 'historic' development of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile.

Starmer says air raid during his visit to Kyiv shows Putin 'doesn't want peace' as he vows Britain 'won't let up' on supporting Ukraine ahead of Trump's return to White House

Keir Starmer insisted an air raid during his visit to Kyiv today showed Vladimir Putin 'doesn't want peace' as he vowed Britain will not 'let up' on support for Ukraine.
At a press conference with Volodymyr Zelensky, the PM said the countries would be standing shoulder to shoulder 'for a hundred years, long after this terrible war is over'.
Explosions and sirens were heard in the Ukrainian capital as Sir Keir made his first trip since taking charge of Downing Street - and days before Donald Trump resumes control of the White House.
Sir Keir pointed to the attacks as evidence of Russia's determination to prolong the conflict. 'Let's be clear, we all want this war to end, no-one wants that more than Ukrainians, but right now Putin shows no sign of wanting peace,' he said.
'The attacks here today are a reminder of the daily attacks and the resolve of the Ukrainian people in the face of it.'
Mr Zelensky said they had discussed a French-backed proposal for Western peacekeepers to monitor a future ceasefire, but it's 'a bit too early to talk about details'.
Asked by Sky News during his trip to Kyiv whether he would be prepared to commit British troops as part of a peacekeeping force, Sir Keir replied: 'Well, I don't want to get ahead of ourselves
'But I have indicated that we will play our full part - because this isn't just about sovereignty in Ukraine.
'It's about what the impact is back in the UK and our values, our freedom, our democracy.
'Because if Russia succeeds in this aggression, it will impact all of us for a very, very long time.'
….
Sir Keir is due to announce another £40million for Ukraine's post-war economic recovery, on top of the £12.8billion in military and civilian aid offered since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The Prime Minister is expected to sign a 'landmark 100-year partnership to deepen security ties' between the UK and Ukraine

The British Prime Minister's visit to Ukraine comes at a pivotal moment for Ukraine's allies in the conflict against Russia, ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday

The treaty additionally includes a system to help track stolen Ukrainian grain exported by Russia from occupied parts of the country.
'Putin's ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level,' Starmer said ahead of the visit.
'This is not just about the here and now, it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century, bringing together technology development, scientific advances and cultural exchanges, and harnessing the phenomenal innovation shown by Ukraine in recent years for generations to come.'

Putin is willing to kill innocent civilians in airline terror atrocities against the West with Europe warned to expect surge in attacks 'soon', expert warns

Putin will not shy away from causing mass casualties in the next phase of Russia's 'hidden war' against the West, an expert has claimed in the wake of suspected 'hybrid' efforts to sow disruption in Europe through alleged sabotage plots.
Keir Giles, an expert on the Russia at Chatham House, told Metro that civilians are 'likely' to be the victims of future plots, and that the West should expect a surge in terror attacks soon.
The Kremlin has been accused of orchestrating attacks on European soil as retribution for the West's broad backing of Ukraine against Russia's full-scale invasion, or to undermine support for Kyiv.
Counter-terrorism police in Britain were last year said to be investigating suspected Russian involvement in the planting of a hidden incendiary device in a parcel on a plane headed for the UK. The device ultimately burst into flames in a warehouse and no casualties were reported.
Mr Giles said that where, during the Cold War, Russia sponsored terrorist movements to carry out attacks in Europe, 'now with these airlines parcel plots, the willingness from Russia to cause mass casualties has returned'.
'We should soon expect a surge in Russian state terrorist attacks across Europe,' he cautioned.
The stark warning came as Poland's Prime Minister claimed that Russia has been planning acts of 'air terror' against airlines worldwide, staging sabotage and diversion on Polish soil and beyond.

Mr Giles told the outlet that Russia's neighbours in northern Europe have been ringing alarm bells 'for years' about the Kremlin's disruptive tactics.
But without hard consequences to deter such attacks, Moscow has continued getting away with interfering in foreign affairs.

Russia has long been accused of meddling in elections in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, using cyber capabilities to push narratives to undermine political stability and, by extension, the Baltic commitment to its allies.
It was also accused of interfering in historic votes in Britain and the US election.
Mr Giles warned that it would take a 'substantial disaster' before Europe wakes up to the imminent threat from Russia.
'There's no indication that anybody is still listening to the Nordics and Baltic states' warnings despite the repeated evidence that they were right,' he said.

More than 97 per cent of the world's communications are transmitted through sub sea optical fibre cables surrounded by armouring wire and a Polyethylene cover

Finland and Germany said in a joint statement that they were investigating 'an incident (that) immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage' before European ministers put together a joint statement blaming Russia.
A fatal plane crash in Lithuania in November also prompted a sharp response from the state, heavily implying possible Russian involvement.
'We see Russia becoming more aggressive, and foreign partners are also on the air, talking about dangers and cases of sabotage or a certain threat of terrorism,' Darius Jauniškis, head of the State Security Department, said.
Suspicions were also roused when a chemical factory in Berlin went up in flames in May last year, as it was revealed the firm made weapons supplied to Ukraine.
Western security officials said in June that the fire at Diehl Metal Applications was targeted by Russian saboteurs trying to disrupt shipments of critical arms and ammunition.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk yesterday echoed allegations that Russia was seeking to disrupt Europe in brief comments during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in Warsaw.

'All I can say, and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these fears, is that Russia has been planning acts of air terror, and not only against Poland, but against airlines all over the world,' Tusk told reporters.
The Kremlin on Thursday dismissed Warsaw's accusations that it had planned acts of 'air terror' against global airlines as proofless, a day after Tusk made the claim.
'This is nothing more than another completely unsubstantiated accusation against Russia,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Rosyjski gaz wróci do Naddniestrza? "W ramach pomocy humanitarnej"

Krasnosielski wyraził też chęć spotkania z prezydentką Mołdawii Maią Sandu, by "osobiście poinformować ją o sytuacji w regionie".

I jeśli ta wizyta rozwiąże problem, to niech będzie on rozwiązany" - dodała.

The Village People, 8,000 troops, Elon Musk and a snub to Keir Starmer: America braces for Trump's 'peaceful' second inauguration

Donald Trump will be sworn in as president for the second time on Monday, capping one of the most astounding political comebacks in American history.
Inauguration Day, by tradition, is largely dedicated to pomp and circumstance - and Trump's 'peaceful' return to power will be quite the glamorous spectacle with four days of events centered around his swearing-in ceremony on January 20.
Trump will take the oath of office outside the US Capitol building in front of an anticipated crowd of 200,000 people, with Congress members saying the demand for tickets has surpassed the number available for distribution.
Country superstar Carrie Underwood will sing just moments after Trump is sworn into office and Trump favorite the Village People, whose hit YMCA became a MAGA anthem along the campaign trail, are teed up to perform at two inaugural events.
All four living former presidents will attend the festivities, including Joe Biden, despite Trump - who refused to accept his 2020 election loss - not making an appearance at the Democrat's swearing-in ceremony four years ago.
Trump invited China's President Xi Jinping, but not UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, despite Britain being America's closest ally. He also extended the invitation to a clutch of the world's richest men including tech titans Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg.
While civilians are excited about the celebration, authorities are preparing for the 'worst', with thousands of police and soldiers expected to descend on the city.

How will Donald Trump's inauguration day unfold on January 20?

Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States on Monday at 5pm GMT (12pm EST) in front of the US Capitol.
He will then deliver his inaugural address, which he has said in interviews that he intends to be uplifting and unifying - a departure from his first speech in 2017, which detailed a broken country he described as 'American Carnage'.
Beyond that, inaugural festivities are guided by tradition - with a luncheon, a parade and balls generally all part of that special day.
His Inauguration Day will begin with a service at St. John's Church Service, followed by tea at the White House.
He and Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn in at the US Capitol at 5pm GMT.
The swearing-in ceremony will be followed by an official farewell for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump will then go to the President's Room near the Senate chamber in the Capitol, where he will sign nominations.

Following the signing ceremony, he will attend a luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.
Trump will then lead the presidential parade with travels from the Capitol to the White House. Upon arrival, he will participate in an Oval Office signing ceremony.
Afterwards, Trump will attend three inaugural balls - the 'Commander in Chief Ball,' the 'Liberty Inaugural Ball' and the 'Starlight Ball'. He is expected to speak at all three events.

How will Donald Trump's second inauguration be different to 2016?
Trump's second inauguration is expected to be a much different affair than the last time America got a new president, with the Republican being the first president-elect to invite foreign leaders to his inauguration.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama will also be noticeably absent from the ceremony, despite her husband former President Barack Obama having said he will attend.
Michelle attended Trump's first inauguration and was present for President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021.
The President-elect has also upped the antics this year with even bigger stars set to perform during the ceremony.
American Idol winner Carried Underwood will sing America the Beautiful, while opera star Christopher Macchio has been tapped to perform the national anthem.
While he had several big names perform at his welcome celebration in 2017 - including Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down and Lee Greenwood, who will perform at the inauguration again this year - the actual ceremony lacked star power.
The biggest name was Jackie Evancho, then 16, who sang the The Star-Spangled Banner. The singer placed second on America's Got Talent in 2010.
Trump will also have his new found tech billionaire buddies in the audience, front and centre, seated alongside his cabinet nominees.

Unlike eight years ago, security will be heightened at Trump's inauguration - but despite the increased police presence, there is expected to be a much larger crowd than when the President-elect took his first oath of office.
Trump, speaking after his 2017 inauguration, said the crowd looked like 'a million and a half people', but photographs showed the numbers were nowhere near that.
He was reportedly unhappy with images published by media outlets suggesting his inauguration crowd in Washington's National Mall was smaller than the one that had gathered for Obama's swearing-in ceremony in 2009.

Who is attending, who is not and who has snubbed Donald Trump?
Michelle Obama will skip Trump's inauguration, even though her husband Barack Obama will be in attendance, along with former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join their husbands for the January 20 swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol.
No explanation was given for why Michelle is skipping Trump's inauguration - which marks the second time in two weeks that the former First Lady will not be in attendance at a gathering of former US leaders and their spouses.
She was the only spouse absent from the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter on January 9. Her husband and Trump were seated next to each other and chatted and laughed like old friends despite the history of political animosity between the Democratic former president and the returning Republican.
Michelle was 'still in Hawaii on an extended holiday vacation' during the funeral service, CNN reported at the time that, citing her advisers who credited her absence to a 'scheduling conflict'.
All three former presidents and their wives attended Trump's first inauguration in 2017, including Hillary Clinton after she lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump. Carter also attended.
Trump has also broken with precedent and invited several world leaders to his inauguration ceremony. Historically, foreign leaders have not attended the inaugural due to security concerns and have sent diplomats in their stead.

But Argentina's president, Javier Milei, a strong Trump supporter, has said he will attend, according to reports. Another Trump backer, Hungary's Viktor Orban, has said he is considering coming. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also said she hopes to attend the inauguration.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is not attending, despite having received an invitation, but is sending an envoy.
Trump refused to invite British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a move that MAGA ally Elon Musk has suggested stems from Labour Party 'interference' in the US election.
The Trump campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission over alleged 'blatant foreign interference' after it emerged that upwards of 100 Labour staffers campaigned in America on behalf of Kamala Harris.
Musk, responding to a tweet questioning why Starmer had not been invited when 12 other world leaders had, wrote on his platform X: 'He sent operatives to America to undermine the US election!'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also among the heads of state who won't be in attendance, with an senior aide telling the Times of Israel that the PM had not formally received an invitation.
But even if he had received an invitation, it is unlikely that Netanyahu would have made the trek to Washington, especially after Trump shared a video to his Truth Social platform that was highly critical of the PM and insinuated that he was a killer.
Netanyahu's attendance would have also been complicated by the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in November over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Although the US has said it would not execute the warrant, the PM could still be at risk of arrest while travelling if he had to make an emergency diversion during travel.

Nigel Farage will be Donald Trump's inauguration guest of honour
Reform UK leader and longtime Trump ally Nigel Farage will be attending the inauguration on Monday, despite his apparent fallout with Musk.
The Brexiteer supported Trump during his presidential campaigns in 2016 and endorsed him again both in the 2020 and 2024 election cycle.
'I've been a friend of Donald Trump's for a decade, I've been very supportive of him, he's been very supportive of me,' Farage told LBC. 'I can't see that changing for a moment.'
Farage, who attended Trump's first inauguration eight years ago, will be in the US for four to five days around the ceremony.
He is expected to speak with Musk during the visit, according to reports, which comes amid a public war of words between the two.

Reform UK leader and longtime Trump ally Nigel Farage will be attending the inauguration on Monday, despite his apparent fallout with Elon Musk. Farage and Reform Party treasurer Nick Candy are pictured with Musk at Mar-A-Lago in December 2024

The pair met last month at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate amid rumors that Musk was poised to plough as much as $100million into Reform.
But after a week in which Musk used his social media platform X to attack major UK political figures on the left over sex abuse gangs, he astonished right-wing politics by gunning for Farage.
'The Reform Party needs a new leader. Farage doesn't have what it takes,' Musk wrote. He did not clarify why he had changed his mind, but the volte face came just a day after Farage distanced Reform from Musk's support for Tommy Robinson, the jailed co-founder of the far-right English Defence League.
Farage's reply suggested he believed this was the reason, as he said: 'My view remains that Tommy Robinson is not right for Reform and I never sell out my principles.'
And in a later tweet Musk appeared to throw his support behind Rupert Lowe, the political novice Reform MP for Great Yarmouth and former chairman of Southampton Football Club.

Donald Trump's billionaire 'tech bros' Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos will join party after bankrolling the fun
Trump's billionaire friends Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg are all set to attend his inauguration on Monday.
NBC news reported the trio are expected to have a prominent spot at the ceremony, citing an an unnamed official source involved in planning the event for January 20.
According to the source, the tech moguls' will be seated together on the platform with other notable guests, including Trump's cabinet nominees.
Musk became Trump's most vocal fan and one of his biggest financial backers during the 2024 election, spending at least $119million mobilizing Trump's supporters. His social media platform X become an unofficial Republican Party campaign tool.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will attend the January 20 swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol with their wives. Bill and Hillary Clinton during the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter on January 9

His influence on Trump also became so stark that the President-elect tapped him to lead an outside task force called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which focuses on cutting federal spending and regulations to improve government efficiency.
Bezos and Zuckerberg will also be in attendance - which is unsurprisingly considering their hefty contributions to the festivities.
There will be a series of inaugural galas held in locations throughout Washington on January 20, some of which Trump may attend. The official events are financed by Trump's inauguration committee, which is chaired by longtime Trump allies Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer, and Kelly Loeffler, a former US senator.
Amazon.com, led by founder Bezos, and Meta Platforms, helmed by Zuckerberg, have said they will donate $1million each to the committee - as have Apple CEO Tim Cook and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Uber and its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi have each donated $1million to the fund.
Trump's committee will be responsible for covering the costs of everything but the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, which is borne by taxpayers.
Trump raised a record $106.7million for his 2017 inauguration festivities.

It's the hottest ticket in town but will Trump still complain about the crowd?
Officials have started distributing more than 220,000 free Inauguration ceremony tickets to the public on January 13. The tickets were sent to members of Congress who are then responsible for handing them out to constituents who applied for them.
Ticket demand has reportedly surpassed availability, the Washington Post reported, citing how the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) received 1,264 requests - despite only having 198 tickets to dish out.
Thousands of spectators without tickets are also expected to fill the National Mall - which will be open to the public - and watch the ceremony on large video screens.
Eight years ago, Trump made a big deal about his inaugural crowd size, despite it being visibly smaller than that of President Barack Obama when the Democrat was sworn-in in 2009.
Obama was the country's first black and biracial president in history.

It's likely more people will come to Trump's inauguration than they did in 2017 (left). Trump made a big deal about his inaugural crowd size, forcing press secretary Sean Spicer to say he had bigger numbers than President Barack Obama in 2009 (right)

Trump memorably had his new press secretary, Sean Spicer, chastise the press one day after the swearing-in for pointing out Trump's smaller crowd.
Spicer claimed 'this was the largest audience to ever witness the inauguration - period - both in person and around the globe.'
It's likely Trump's crowd will be larger this year from eight years ago, simply because he's grown his support. This time around the Republican won the popular vote - the first GOP nominee to do so in 20 years.
He's also hosting an indoor rally for the MAGA faithful a day before.

Heightened security as 8,000 extra troops will be deployed on to the streets of DC
The last time a president was inaugurated, there was a global pandemic and a violent siege at the very spot at the US Capitol where the ceremony takes place.
Authorities are preparing for potential demonstrations this time around but is not anticipating any major problems.
That said, federal law enforcement is operating at a heightened threat environment, especially following the two assassination attempts on Trump's life last year and the New Year's terror attack in New Orleans.
Officials will install 30 miles of anti-scale fencing around the Capitol - a stark reminder of the January 6, 2021 siege.
Almost 25,000 officers and nearly 8,000 soldiers expected to descend on the capital on Monday, DC police officials have confirmed.
Unlike demonstrations or other major events in the District of Columbia, traditional red tape is cleared for national special security events, allowing federal, city and state law enforcement agencies to work together.
The District of Columbia National Guard will deploy roughly 7,800 soldiers for perimeter security, which includes traffic control and patrolling Metro stations.
Thousands of federal agents, police and other law enforcement will be on hand.

The Secret Service is in charge of running security for national special security events, and planning for the inauguration began as soon as the last one ended.
In preparation for the inauguration, the FBI has set up command posts at the Washington field office and FBI headquarters to act as 'central hubs for employees to gather intelligence, assess potential threats, coordinate investigations, and surge resources as needed,' the bureau said in a statement.
Analysts at the Washington field office will be working before and during the inauguration to assess and share intelligence with other law enforcement, and the FBI will have 'personnel and other assets at the ready to respond immediately to address any safety concerns or threats that arise'.
Authorities have also increased CCTV around the city and are using drones to assist with surveillance.

Which high profile performers are lined up to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration?
Carrie Underwood has been tapped to perform America the Beautiful during Donald Trump's official swearing-in ceremony.
'I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,' Underwood said in a statement Monday.
'I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.'

Macchio also performed at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July and during Trump's second Butler, Pennsylvania rally in October - marking his return to the locale where he an attempt was made on his life in July.
American disco group the Village People - the creators of Trump rally staples YMCA and Macho Man - is set to perform at one of Trump's inaugural balls and a rally he's holding in Washington the day before he's sworn in.
'We know this won't make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,' the band said in a post on its Facebook page Monday.
'Our song YMCA is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.
'Therefore, we believe it's now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.'

Controversial justices swearing in America's new leaders
Donald Trump will take the oath of office, likely administered by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
Justice Roberts was embroiled in scandal last year after a leaked memo revealed that he strong-armed his fellow Supreme Court judges into allowing him the key role in cases involving Donald Trump.
The conservative judge took the lead in the March 2024 case on whether states could remove the former president from their ballots over his role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Vice President-elect JD Vance is being sworn in by Chief Justice Brett Kavanaugh

He also took charge of the case concerning prosecution of the January 6 rioters himself from Justice Samuel Alito after his fellow conservative was embroiled in a row about his wife flying the Stars and Stripes upside down from their home.
Vice President-elect JD Vance is also being sworn in by a SCOTUS justice battling scandal.
Chief Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was pilloried for an unfounded rape accusation before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, will swear Vance into office.
Kavanaugh was appointed to the Supreme Court by Trump in 2018. Both he and Vance are alumnus of Yale Law School.
Bishop, Rabbi, Imam and televangelist will all speak at the ceremony
A Catholic Bishop, a Rabbi, a MAGA televangelist and a controversial Imam will actually all deliver remarks at Donald Trump's inauguration.
A leaked copy of the ceremony program, obtained by the Daily Beast, revealed that Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, the archbishop of New York, will deliver the invocation alongside Franklin Graham, son of the famous evangelist Billy Graham.
Cardinal Dolan runs Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, located just blocks from Trump Tower.

Rabbi Ari Berman, president of Yeshiva University, and Imam Husham Al-Husainy - the leader of an Islamic center in Michigan that refused to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization - will deliver the benediction at the end of the service.
Reverend Father Frank Mann of Brooklyn and Senior Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of Detroit will also speak during the benediction.
Sewell, according to his church's website, was 'heavily involved in drugs and drug dealing, ultimately becoming a gang leader' before he became a pastor. He also reportedly grew up in an abusive home.

Joe and Jill Biden will hand back keys to the White House to Donald and Melania Trump
Joe and Jill Biden will greet incoming President and First Lady at the White House on Monday morning, ahead of the ceremony.
Eight years ago when Donald Trump was sworn-in, he and first lady Melania Trump started their day at church - at the historic yellow St. John's Episcopal just outside the White House.
They were then met with a cringeworthy greeting on the White House's North Portico by President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
The Obamas each greeted Melania, who presented them with a Tiffany blue box wrapped in a white bow, with a kiss, taking her gently in their arms.
'So nice to see you. How are you?' Obama asked her. As they did so, Trump saluted two marines guarding the North Portico.
Fumbling with the box Melania had given her, Michelle gave the gift to her husband, who passed the box off the gift to an aide nearby.
The group posed for a portrait before heading inside for a tea and coffee reception that was also attended by Joe Biden and his wife Jill, and Mike Pence and his wife Karen.

Four years ago the Trumps departed from the White House's South Lawn ahead of Biden's swearing-in ceremony and the outgoing president made remarks at Joint Base Andrews before heading to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He and Melania are pictured exiting Air Force One at the Palm Beach Airport on the way to Mar-a-Lago Club on January 20, 2020

Typically the former president and first lady fly off in a Marine One-type helicopter from the east side of the US Capitol after the swearing-in occurs.
A Marine captain from Marine Barracks will escort Melania to the ceremony. The First Lady was also escorted by a Marine in 2017. She and Trump are known to be big fans of the US Marine Corps.
After a lunch with congressional leaders at the US Capitol, Trump will proceed down Pennsylvania Avenue in a motorcade to the White House, accompanied by a procession of military regiments, school marching bands, floats and citizens' groups.
The new president and his guests will then observe the rest of the parade from a reviewing stand.
From there they headed to the US Capitol ahead of the noon swearing-in.
It's tradition for the departing president to leave a letter for the incoming president on the Resolute Desk. Despite Trump breaking tradition by being one of four presidents to skip a successor's inauguration - the others were John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Johnson - he did leave a 'shockingly gracious' letter behind for the Democrat, according to Biden biographer Chris Whipple.
Four years ago the Trumps departed from the White House's South Lawn ahead of Biden's swearing-in ceremony and the outgoing president made remarks at Joint Base Andrews before heading to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

How to watch Donald Trump's inauguration
Thousands of people will gather on the National Mall in DC to watch the inauguration ceremony, but there are plenty of alternatives for those who cannot attend in-person.
The White House will livestream the inauguration online.
BBC One, Sky News, ITV News and Channel 4 will also be covering the event.
All major US broadcast networks will carry the inauguration including NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, CSPAN, Fox News, and PBS.

Donald Trump's four-day inauguration celebration
The inauguration celebrations kick off on Saturday with a president's reception and fireworks display will take place at Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.
There will also be a Cabinet reception and vice president's dinner.
On Sunday - the eve of the inauguration - Donald Trump is set to hold a campaign-style Make America Great Again Victory Rally at an arena in downtown Washington.
Such an event likely will help spur thousands of Trump's supporters to pack the city for the inaugural festivities. It would be Trump's first rally in the District of Columbia since Jan. 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a failed bid to delay certification of the 2020 election.
Earlier in the day, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Trump will also attend a candlelight dinner.
Monday's schedule is jam-packed with official ceremonies, meet-and-greets and glamours balls.
Inaugural activities will conclude on Tuesday morning with a National Prayer Service and Trump's focus will shift to legislation and fulfilling campaign promises.

Donald Trump is expected to pass a 'blizzard of executive orders' on his first day in office. He is pictured in May 2020 before signing an executive order related to regulating social media

What happens after the inauguration?
Donald Trump is expected to pass a 'blizzard of executive orders on the economy, as well as on the border' on his first day in office, Republican US Senator John Barrasso, a Trump ally, told CBS.
Two sources familiar with the planning said Trump is preparing a flood of executive orders and directives that could total more than a 100 for day one and beyond in what is known internally as a 'shock and awe' effort by Trump.
He is expected to sign orders that give immigration officers more latitude to arrest migrants with no criminal records, send more troops to the US-Mexico border and restart construction of the border wall.
The orders will include a drive to increase energy production and follow through on Trump's oft-stated campaign vow to 'drill, baby, drill'.
Trump also is likely to issue the first wave of pardons for defendants convicted by the federal government for their participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, siege of the Capitol.
