It is 'inevitable' that Russia will strike Britain 'and wipe it off the earth' with missiles in revenge for Storm Shadow attacks, Putin hardliner MP warns
A hardline Russian MP has warned that it is 'inevitable' that Russia will strike Britain directly with missiles to wipe it off the Earth.
Andrey Gurulev, a reservist general and pro-Putin MP, insisted that the Kremlin would avenge the Ukrainian use of British Storm Shadow missiles against his country.
He told Kremlin-controlled state television: 'There's still going to come a point where we're going to strike. It is inevitable.
'The question is simply a matter of time and decision-making. And there is no other way.
'If today Britain is hitting our territory with its missiles from Ukraine, everyone realises that they will not fly anywhere without NATO control systems and satellite navigation.
The Russian defence ministry claims six Storm Shadows were fired at Bryansk region on Tuesday alone as part of Ukraine's largest aerial bombardment of the war on Vladimir Putin's territory. Moscow claimed the £2 million missiles were shot down.
Another two Storm Shadows were shot down over the Black Sea, it was alleged.
Today's Russian onslaught on Ukraine is seen as revenge for the strikes a day earlier which hit chemical plants and fuel facilities.
But Gurulev said Putin would ultimately strike directly on Britain.

'I believe that this is a direct reason for Britain to simply not be on Earth,' he said.
'And I'm not the only one who thinks that, we're not the only ones who think that.
'I think 80 per cent of the world will clap for us. That's 100 per cent.'
TV propagandists have previously suggested using Putin's new Satan-2 missile - known to the Russians as Sarmat - to obliterate Britain.
This is a 208-ton intercontinental silo-launched 15,880mph hypersonic nuclear missile, the size of a 14-storey tower block.
It is supposedly deployed with the Russian nuclear forces.
Bryansk region was also hit with half a dozen US-supplied ATACMS missiles, according to the Russians.
Earlier this week Gurulev mooted Putin and Donald Trump carving up Greenland - getting half of the territory each.
He also forecast Russian seizing Spitsbergen, a Norwegian island in the Arctic where military operations are banned, and use it as a defence stronghold.

Russia launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine on Wednesday, forcing the country to introduce preventive power cuts, the Ukrainian energy minister said.
'The enemy continues to terrorize Ukrainians,' Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook, urging residents to stay in shelters during the ongoing threat and follow official updates.
The state energy company Ukrenergo reported emergency power outages in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad regions.
Russian forces launched missile strikes targeting energy infrastructure in the western Lviv region early Wednesday, said the city's mayor, Andrii Sadovyi.
'During the morning attack, enemy cruise missiles were recorded in the region,' he said.
No casualties or damage were reported.
'The enemy attacked the energy infrastructure of our region and Ukraine,' Andriy Sadovyi wrote on social media.
'Emergency shutdowns have been introduced in 6 regions, but Lviv is not on this list yet.'
NATO warplanes are scrambled as Putin launches huge attack near Poland border
NATO scrambled its warplanes early today in response to a fierce Russian bombardment of Ukraine close to its border with Poland.
The Russian strikes - hitting vital energy facilities in the coldest weeks of winter - were led by Vladimir Putin's Tu-22 and Tu-95 strategic bombers.
The onslaught was seen as instant revenge for Tuesday's Ukrainian aerial strikes on Russia, the heaviest of the almost three year war.
In particular, Putin was rattled by Ukraine's use of British Storm Shadow and American ATACMS missiles which hit key defence facilities including a chemical plant in Bryansk region.
NATO forces went on full alert in Poland with warplanes scrambled, the country's operational command headquarters said.
'Duty fighter pairs have been scrambled, and the ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest state of readiness,' said a statement.
'The steps taken are aimed at ensuring security in the areas bordering the threatened areas.'
President Zelensky described it as 'another massive Russian attack' and said Putin's forces had continued to focus their attacks on his country's energy infrastructure as Ukrainians face the harsh winter cold.

'Among their objectives were gas and energy facilities that sustain normal life for our people,' he said.
He added that more than 40 missiles had been launched in the attack, including ballistic missiles. At least 30 of these were destroyed, he said.
Additionally, more than 70 Russian attack drones were launched during the night.
Zelensky issued an appeal to Ukraine's western allies to rapidly shore up its air defences, stating that 'promises made by partners at the NATO summit in Washington... still remain partially unfulfilled.'
Andriy Sadovyi, mayor of the western city of Lviv, said that 'during the morning attack, enemy cruise missiles were recorded on the territory of the region.'
Some seven TU-22M3 and six TU-95MS strategic bombers were in the air with the Ukrainian capital Kyiv among the targets.
Russia had earlier vowed to respond to Tuesday's attacks when a reported 14 Western missiles and more than 200 drones hit chemical plants, energy facilities and other defence-related targets in Russia in Ukraine's most ambitious aerial strike of the entire war.
'The actions by the Kyiv regime supported by Western handlers will trigger retaliation,' said the Russian defence ministry in a statement.
Russia claimed to have shot down eight £2million Storm Shadow missiles but this could not be verified.
Today Russia attacked with Kh-22 missiles, triggering emergency power outages in multiple Ukrainian regions, already hit by crippling electricity shortages due to earlier Putin strikes.
Sea-launched Kalibr missiles were also deployed. Gas facilities were also hit.
Herman Halushchenko, Kyiv's Energy Minister, warned: 'The enemy does not stop terrorising Ukrainians.
'Due to the mass attack, the operator of the transmission system applies preventive measures of restrictions.
'Stay tuned for official announcements. While the danger lasts - stay in shelters!'
Svitlana Onishchuk, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk military administration, said: 'The morning in Ukraine began with rocket fire.
'The enemy used various types of weapons.
'In the Carpathian region, the target was critical infrastructure facilities. Air Defence Forces were operating in the region.

Ukraine also hit Russia overnight, setting fire to a key Lukoil refinery in Volgograd.

NATO launches 'Baltic Sentry' to increase critical infrastructure security
NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte co-hosted a Summit of Baltic Sea Allies on Tuesday (14 January 2025), along with President Alexander Stubb of Finland and Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia.
At the meeting in Helsinki, Mr Rutte announced the launch of a new military activity by NATO to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. “Baltic Sentry” will enhance NATO’s military presence in the Baltic Sea and improve Allies’ ability to respond to destabilizing acts.
At the Summit, leaders from across the region addressed the growing threat to critical undersea infrastructure. The Secretary General said recent sabotage had damaged energy and communication cables, but he was confident that, “by working together with all Allies – we will do what it takes to ensure the safety and security not only of our critical infrastructure but of all that we hold dear.”
“Baltic Sentry” will involve a range of assets, including frigates and maritime patrol aircraft. The Secretary General also announced the deployment of new technologies, including a small fleet of naval drones, and highlighted that NATO will work with Allies to integrate national surveillance assets – all to improve the ability to protect critical undersea infrastructure and respond if required. NATO will work within the Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network, which includes industry, to explore further ways to protect infrastructure and improve resilience of underwater assets.
Mr Rutte also stressed the importance of robust enforcement. He highlighted how Finland has demonstrated that firm action within the law is possible, “Ship captains must understand that potential threats to our infrastructure will have consequences, including possible boarding, impounding, and arrest.”
For more information about Baltic Sentry, see the news release from NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).
Allies participating in the Summit signed a joint declaration, the text of which is available here.
Eagle S”
Joint Statement of the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit
President of Finland Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal, Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson have issued a joint statement in the presence of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Henna Virkkunen at the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit in Helsinki on Tuesday 14 January 2025.
We, the Heads of State or Government of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden, have met today in Helsinki, in the presence of the Secretary General of NATO and the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, to address the recent increase in serious incidents damaging critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
We are deeply concerned by actions, be they negligent or malicious, which cause damage to or threaten the functioning of critical undersea infrastructure. We strongly condemn acts of sabotage to critical undersea infrastructure.
We are determined to deter, detect and counter any attempts at sabotage. Any attack against our infrastructure will be met with a robust and determined response. We stand ready to attribute hostile actions committed by malign actors, as appropriate.
We welcome that NATO has launched the enhanced Vigilance Activity “Baltic Sentry” to improve situational awareness and deter hostile activities. We welcome the efforts of Allies to deploy additional assets at sea, in the air, on land and below the surface of the sea, to enhance vigilance and deterrence. The Commander Task Force-Baltic in Rostock has been activated and coordinates Allied ships in the Baltic Sea. NATO´s Maritime Centre for the Security of Critical Undersea Infrastructure and NATO´s Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network will support efforts to protect and secure vital undersea assets.
Moreover, the involved nations are coordinating the employment of different options and assets. As an example, the Commander Task Force-Baltic works towards establishing an integrated regional picture on critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea that contributes to NATO’s work in protecting critical undersea infrastructure.
We continue to strengthen our deterrence and defence, modernise our capabilities, recognising the urgent need for increased defence expenditure to address and counter evolving security threats.
We will work, including within the NATO framework, to begin deploying innovative solutions, developing new technologies for surveillance and tracking of suspicious vessels and undersea monitoring. This will include enhanced partnerships with the private sector, in particular infrastructure operators and cutting-edge technology companies. We will actively exchange information, track and assess incidents to analyse trends, and share best practices of our response.
We remain prepared to act individually and collectively to protect our critical undersea infrastructure and increase resilience, including by building on and expanding the existing NATO-EU cooperation. We welcome additional measures undertaken by Allies and partners to strengthen security in our region, which reinforce existing and planned NATO responses.
Together, we will identify further measures in accordance with international law of the sea, including the freedom of navigation, to prevent and effectively respond to willful damaging of critical undersea infrastructure or irresponsible behaviour. Such behaviour interferes, inter alia, with the freedom to lay cables and pipelines and poses a significant risk to the marine environment. We will also take actions for accountability and stronger enforcement against those responsible for damaging undersea infrastructure, including compensation for damage.
We will take further steps to enhance resilience of our communications network and energy infrastructure, including reliable supply chains, enhancing physical and cybersecurity measures, developing European undersea surveillance capabilities and swift repair capacity, engaging with the private sector. We will work towards a Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Infrastructure Protection in the region.
Combatting breakage of undersea cables and pipelines represents a global problem. We urge all States to adhere to their obligations to adopt laws and regulations necessary to provide that the breaking of or injury to a cable or pipeline in the high seas or exclusive economic zones by a ship flying their flag or by a person subject to their jurisdiction shall be a punishable offence, and to prosecute as appropriate.
Russia´s use of the so-called shadow fleet poses a particular threat to the maritime and environmental security in the Baltic Sea region and globally. This reprehensible practice also threatens the integrity of undersea infrastructure, increases risks connected to sea-dumped chemical munitions, and significantly supports funding of Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
We are taking robust steps to address these threats. We reserve our rights, in accordance with international law, to take action against any suspected vessels that circumvent sanctions and threaten our security, infrastructure and the environment. In close coastal state co-operation, we are increasing surveillance of the vessels, including the inspections of vessel insurance certificates. Additionally, further measures, including the introduction of tracking tools and the extension of sanctions targeting the shadow fleet, will be put into practice. We encourage further EU-NATO cooperation in responding to the threats caused by the reckless activities of vessels serving Russian cargo flow.
Increasing the security of the Baltic Sea and its critical undersea infrastructure is a joint interest for the Alliance and the EU. Through our joint actions, as outlined in this declaration, we actively contribute to efforts to secure and safeguard our undersea critical infrastructure, thereby strengthening NATO’s collective efforts and advancing NATO’s ongoing work, including the renewal of NATO’s maritime strategy, as we approach the NATO Summit in the Hague.
Hostile or reckless actions against critical undersea infrastructure or other critical infrastructure are not limited to the Baltic Sea region. We will ensure coherence and coordination and intensify cooperation to strengthen security in the whole Alliance.

Germany tells troops to shoot down drones on sight after wave of suspicious UAVs was seen over military sites amid hybrid war with Russia
The German cabinet has agreed plans to allow the army to shoot down suspicious drones after several sightings over military sites, the government announced today, as Russia is accused of waging a 'hybrid war' against the West.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that 'especially since Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine, we have seen that drones are being used more and more frequently, which poses an increasing challenge for the police and their current technology.'
The ministry said that 'security services have noted that reports of sightings of uncooperative drones over critical infrastructure and military properties in Germany are increasing.'
'Espionage or sabotage are regularly considered as a possible reason,' it added in a statement, as tensions between Moscow and Berlin continue to run high.
Under current regulations, soldiers can assist the police in forcing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to change direction or land, threaten to shoot it down or fire warning shots.
But under the new proposals, a drone could be shot down by the army if it is believed the device is being 'used against the lives of people or against a critical facility, and the use of armed force is the only means of averting this present danger', the ministry said.
Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over several military bases and other sensitive sites in Germany in recent months, at a time when the country is on high alert for Russian espionage.
Police in the southern state of Bavaria this week said they were looking into several incidents in which drones had flown over military installations in Manching and Neuburg an der Donau.

The Manching site hosts a military aerodrome and is where the Eurofighter jet is developed by Airbus.
Several drones have also recently been spotted at an industrial zone near the North Sea and near the US airbase in Ramstein.
The changes must still be voted through in the lower and upper houses of parliament before becoming law.
Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in October that Moscow was using 'hybrid means' to target Germany, adding: 'We see many, many examples, time and again.'
She cited drone activity around the new gas terminals, suggesting they were 'not there to observe the beautiful local landscape, but because there is a chemical park there and a... storage facility for nuclear waste nearby,'
According to German media reports, the reconnaissance was carried out by unmanned Russian military aircraft. Officials warned the scouting could be 'for the purposes of sabotage'.
It comes as Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk today warned that Russia had planned acts of 'air terror' against airlines worldwide, accusing Moscow of staging sabotage and diversion on Polish soil and beyond.
Members of the Ukrainian police investigate a crater following a strike on the village of Sknyliv, some 60km from Lviv, on January 15
'All I can say, and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these fears, is that Russia has been planning acts of air terror, and not only against Poland, but against airlines all over the world,' Tusk told reporters.
Russian spies were accused of sending a package full of erotic gadgets to DHL depots in Britain and Germany last year in an alleged 'test-run' for a larger attack on a US-bound flight.
Two incendiary devices had been shipped via a DHL logistics centre on July 22 from Lithuania to Birmingham, England, and Leipzig, Germany, resulting in a fire.
It was later revealed the explosives were hidden in a box containing sex toys and massage pillows.
Moscow has also been accused of jamming satellite systems for civilian air flights with state of the art technology.
The Kremlin has been accused of trying to undermine European interests over their backing of Kyiv and sharp sanctions on Moscow since the war in Ukraine began almost three years ago.
In August, Russia was accused of flying multiple drones over Germany to collect sensitive information on a nuclear power plant. Germany decommissioned the last of its nuclear power plants in 2023 after years of fierce debate.
Intelligence officers blamed Russia, telling Bild drones were scouting over Brunsbütte as a potential target for sabotage.

In July, US intelligence uncovered a plot they believe shows Russian intent to sponsor a series of assassinations of defence industry executives across Europe, including Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, a staunch supporter of Ukraine.
A top German official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US, and western officials said the Papperger plot was the most far along.
Rheinmetall is the top German manufacturer of 155mm artillery shells used by Ukraine to deter the Russian advance. The company was on the brink of opening a new plant within Ukraine tasked with producing armoured vehicles as news of the foiled plot broke.
Baerbock said Russia was waging a hybrid war of aggression, including cyberattacks and sabotage of infrastructure.
'This underlines once again that we as Europeans must protect ourselves as best we can and not be naïve,' she said.
'Russia's intensifying campaign of subversion is something that we are taking extremely seriously and have been intently focused on over the past few months,' National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson told CNN at the time.
'The United States has been discussing this issue with our NATO Allies, and we are actively working together to expose and disrupt these activities,' she said, reiterating support for Ukraine in the face of destabilisation efforts.
Russia has been accused of trying to destabilise Ukraine's allies since the war in Ukraine began.
Moscow also allegedly upped its subversive activities after Biden relaxed rules on Ukraine firing long-range missiles into Russia.
The hybrid warfare tactics they are alleged to have engaged in include the 'weaponising mass migration' along the EU's western border.
Western leaders accused Russia of sabotaging vital cables in the Baltic in November, and have repeatedly accused Russia of sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines which provide Europe with gas.
There have also been accusations that Russia has influenced elections in Moldova and Georgia.
Russia 'has been planning acts of air terror against airlines all over the world', Polish leader warns amid growing fears Putin is plotting an atrocity in the West
Russia has been planning acts of 'air terror' against airlines worldwide, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sensationally claimed today as he met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Warsaw.
Mr Tusk accused Moscow of staging sabotage and diversion on Polish soil and beyond.
'All I can say, and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these fears, is that Russia has been planning acts of air terror, and not only against Poland, but against airlines all over the world,' Tusk told reporters.
It comes just weeks after Russia was accused of shooting down an Azerbaijan Airlines plane over its soil, before the plane crash landed in Kazakhstan, killing 83.
Government sources blamed Russia but said they did not think it was done on purpose.
Ten years ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was also shot down over eastern Ukraine in territory controlled by Russian and Russia-led forces, killing 298, including 80 children. A Joint Investigation Team found that the plane was hit by a Russian missile from the Russian 53rd Anti-aircraft Brigade.
Counter-terrorism police were last year said to be investigating suspected Russian involvement in the planting of a hidden incendiary device in a parcel on a plane headed for Britain.
The device burst into flames at a warehouse and no injuries were reported, but investigators believe there could have been far more serious consequences had it ignited while in flight.
The allegation comes amid growing fears Putin could be plotting to use 'hybrid warfare' to undermine Ukraine's backers in the West.
Defence officials warned in November that Europe remains 'totally unprepared' to deal with such threats, lacking the resources to effectively counter sabotage, arson, assassination and attacks on infrastructure.

A former senior European official told the Guardian said Europe could expect more 'hybrid' attacks to unfold on the continent in the wake of the American decision to permit usage of long-range ATACMS missiles against targets deep inside Russia.
Russia has been accused of trying to destabilise the West and allies since the war in Ukraine began by allegedly 'weaponising mass migration' along its western border; sabotaging Nord Stream pipelines providing Europe with gas; influencing elections in Moldova and Georgia; jamming aircraft GPS; and even sending exploding sex toys to Western Europe.
The cutting of crucial underseas telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea in November generated outrage and stark warnings about Russia's ability to allegedly interfere in European affairs.
