Denmark's Prime Minister responds to Trump's bid to buy Greenland as Don Jr. arrives in the territory
Greenland is not for sale, insists Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Donald Trump Jr. landed in chilly, arctic island territory on Tuesday morning for a surprise trip amid his father's latest threats to purchase it from Denmark.
But Frederiksen said on Tuesday that Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede 'has been very, very clear' that they don't intend to become part of the U.S.
'There is a lot of support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future either,' Frederiksen insisted.
While multiple people said Don Jr.'s trip to Greenland is 'personal' and not political, the president-elect noted how his son was joined by his 'representatives.'
Trump also made it clear that his son's trip is intended to further his goal of the U.S. purchasing Greenland.
But the chairman of one of the largest political parties in Greenland denied a meeting with Don Jr. and reiterated that Greenland is not up for grabs.
Siumut party leader Erik Jensen told the press: 'I can confirm that I have not planned to meet with him. I say it again that Greenland is not for sale and never will be.'
'Everyone is welcome to visit our country, including Trump,' he added. 'When the future president's son, who is also his own advisor, shows interest in our country, it means that Greenland is serious.'
Don Jr. posted multiple videos and photos from Greenland on Tuesday morning.
Donald Trump Jr. landed in Greenland on Tuesday for a trip those close with him insist is only personal in nature
But President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday a post that suggests the trip is political by noting his 'representatives' went to Greenland with his eldest son
James Blair joins him on the visit to Greenland. Blair is incoming as deputy chief of staff for legislative, political and public affairs for Trump's second presidential term. He was the 2024 campaign's political director and oversaw a ground game seeking to reach low-propensity voters.
Also on the trip are conservative Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and Sergio Gor, with whom Don Jr. co-owns Winning Team Publishing.
And Trump made it clear on his social media site that the trip is meant to move forward his intentions to have the U.S. buy Greenland in his second term.
'Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland,' Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. 'The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE!'
'This is a deal that must happen,' he insisted. 'MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!'
During lunch with community members in Nuuk, Greenland, Don Jr. put his father on speakerphone so he could have a quick word with the locals.
Sources told DailyMail.com ahead of the trip that Don planned to shoot video and podcasting content and insisted he is not meeting with any government officials or political figures.
Some reports suggested the president-elect's oldest son was visiting at the request of Jensen, who is Greenland's minister of finance and supports the independence of Greenland.
Jensen now denies he intends to meet with Don.
Don Jr. posted images of himself and Charlie Kirk and Sergio Gor in front of the statue of Hans Egede, the Danish-Norwegian missionary who led mission efforts in Greenland during the late 1700s. Don Jr. also posted an image of the runway staff at the airport in Greenland

Donald Trump Jr visits Greenland amid father’s interest in owning island
Donald Trump Jr touched down in Greenland on Tuesday, hours after his father reiterated his interest in taking control of the Arctic autonomous territory, pledging to “make Greenland great again”.
After arriving in the Greenlandic capital in a Trump-branded plane, he told a waiting crowd in the Nuuk airport arrivals hall – some wearing red Make America Great Again caps – that he was “very excited to be here”. It was, he said, “a little colder here than it is in Florida”, adding that the US president-elect “says hello to everyone in Greenland”.
Asked about his plans, he said he was visiting as a tourist, had no plans to meet politicians and declined to talk about US interest in Greenland, saying he was merely there to “see a lot of the sights, talk to some people and have a good time”.
He was later pictured outside a controversial statue of Hans Egede, a Danish-Norwegian missionary who is seen as a symbol of Danish colonialism.
Trump Jr said in a podcast that aired on Monday that he was “not buying Greenland” but that he was going on a “very long, personal day trip”. He added: “I’m hopping on Trump Force One and landing in Greenland tomorrow morning.”
Nevertheless, his arrival in the capital, Nuuk, prompted the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, to break her silence to say the autonomous territory was “not for sale”. “Seen through the eyes of the Danish government, Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” the Social Democrat told TV2.
Describing the US as “our absolute closest ally”, she said “we always want to work more closely with the Americans”. But she called on “everyone to respect that Greenlanders are a people, a population,” adding: “Only they can define their future.”
The visit is taking place against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Greenland and Denmark as the Trump administration prepares to take office.
Greenland is a former Danish colony and remains part of the kingdom of Denmark, which continues to control its foreign and security policy.
As well as its supply of multiple in-demand raw materials for green technology – including 25 of the 34 that the EU needs – amid melting Arctic ice and strategically positioned between the US and Russia, Greenland is viewed as increasingly important for defence and emerging as an international geopolitical battleground.
The Danish King Frederik shocked some historians with a new year move to change the royal coat of arms to more prominently feature Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which was also seen as a rebuke to Trump’s advances.
A meeting between the Greenlandic prime minister, Múte Egede, and the king, scheduled to take place on Wednesday in Denmark, was cancelled on Monday without explanation. The royal house has since put it down to “calendar gymnastics”.
Trump Jr has said he is visiting the vast island in a private capacity and as a tourist. Others in his group include the political activist Charlie Kirk, who cofounded the pro-Trump conservative organisation Turning Point USA.
“We want to meet people,” the president-elect’s son said in his podcast, Triggered. “They seem like a great bunch of people.”
The Greenlandic government said no meetings had been scheduled with government representatives. The Danish and Greenlandic governments have both said it is a private visit.
“We have not been briefed on the nature of his programme, and therefore this is a private visit,” Mininnguaq Kleist, Greenland’s minister of independence and foreign affairs, told Reuters. He added that Trump Jr was expected to land at about 1300 GMT and stay for about four to five hours.
In a statement, Greenland’s ministry of foreign affairs said: “Greenland is open and those who wish to visit us are welcome.”
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of just 57,000, boasts mineral, oil and natural gas wealth. But development has been slow, leaving its economy reliant on fishing and annual subsidies from Denmark.
The capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than to the Danish capital, Copenhagen.
Trump, who takes office on 20 January, said his son and various representatives were going to visit “some of the most magnificent areas and sights”.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump praised the island and promised to “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” he wrote.
Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland during his 2017-2021 term but was publicly rebuffed by Greenlandic and Danish authorities before any conversations could take place.
Over recent months, tensions have escalated significantly between Greenland and Denmark. There is intense anger in Greenland over investigations into the forced contraceptive scandal of the 1960s and 70s, prompting the Greenlandic prime minister to accuse Denmark of genocide. There are also continuing protests in Copenhagen and Nuuk over the separation of Greenlandic children from their parents.
Last week, Egede stepped up a push for independence from Denmark in his new year speech, saying he wanted it to break free from “the shackles of colonialism” to shape its own future, although he did not mention the US.
Aaja Chemnitz, a Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament, said the idea of a US takeover should be firmly rejected. “I don’t want to be a pawn in Trump’s hot dreams of expanding his empire to include our country,” she said.
Two weeks ago, Trump said on Truth Social that “the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity”.
Denmark's king changes coat of arms with a message for Trump in his bid to buy Greenland
If Donald Trump thinks prying away Greenland from Denmark will be easy, King Frederik sent a message with a big club and a Polar Bear to disabuse him of the notion.
Frederik, who succeeded the Danish throne after the abdication of Queen Margrethe II last year, has released a new coat of arms that reaffirms his kingdom's longtime claim the territory.
The territory has been under Denmark's effective control since the 14th Century, but Donald Trump has once again revealed his interest in the U.S. buying or obtaining the territory, which lies between Canada and Scandanavia.
The new royal coat of arms released by the crown dispenses with a historic use of three crowns to representing the historic union of Scandanavian nations.
Instead, the new coat of arms shows an enlarged Polar Bear, as well as a ram signifying its dominion over the Faroe Islands, a self-governing part of the Kingdom.
A pair of Nordic men with ripped physiques now hold fatter and more prominent clubs – a Danish version of Teddy Roosevelt's 'speak softly and carry a big stick' rejoinder. The men are slightly more broad-shouldered, with bigger pectoral muscles, a wider torso, and taller stance, plus a bit more hair.
The Polar Bear, in addition being displayed larger, has a long menacing red tongue.
Word of the redesign spread on a day when Trump once again asserted his intention to expand the nation – after bringing back both his ambitions for Greenland and threatening to retake the Panama Canal in a pre-Christmas message complaining about 'ridiculous' fees.
The new flag issued by the King Frederik features a more prominent Polar Bear, in a signal of keeping Greenland within the realm. Two nordic men are also drawn as more more musclar and are brandishing bigger clubs
Trump has said it is an 'absolute necessity' to acquire the island.
He also also referenced ways to forge an expanded empire by issuing repeat statements about making Canada the 51st state.
The symbolic statement of dominion over Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark and former colony, comes despite a separatist movement there.
Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede gave a New Year's speech where he said 'we must work to remove the obstacles to cooperation – which we can describe as the shackles of colonialism – and move forward.'
'It is about time that we ourselves take a step and shape our future, also with regard to who we will cooperate closely with, and who our trading partners will be,' he added.
The new royal coat of arms has a larger polar bear, signifying Greenland, an a ram signifying the Faroe Islands
King Frederik X released the new coat of arms less than a year after taking the throne
Donald Trump, set to be sworn in January 20, has said it is an 'absolute necessity' to acquire Greenland
Egede has rejected Trump's offers to buy the island of 836,330 square miles (larger than Alaska) in 2019 and again last year. 'Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,' Egede has said.
'It is important to signal from the Danish side that Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Danish realm, and that this is not up for discussion. This is how you mark it,' Royal expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen told TV2.
Trump continued to use the language of expansion as recently as Monday in an interview with Hugh Hewitt where he vowed to 'un-ban' President Biden's new protections of millions of acres of offshore lands from drilling.
Speaking about the wealth of U.S. energy resources, Trump said: 'You know, we have something that nobody else has. I mean, nobody has, to the extent we have it, and it'll be more by the time we finish, because I'll be able to expand, you know, we're going to expand our country,' Trump said.
Короче, компания Trump, Musk and sci-fi brothers, LLC приступила к активной работе.
Russia's Greenland warning to Trump: Kremlin tells US 'we are present in the Arctic zone' and says it is 'watching' after Donald's refusal to rule out using military force to seize vast territory
The Kremlin has issued a warning to Trump over Greenland, telling him that Russia is 'watching' and 'present in the Arctic zone' after the US President-elect refused to rule out using military force to seize the vast territory.
Trump refused to rule out military action to take control of the Arctic island at a press conference Tuesday and had earlier vowed to slap high tariffs on Denmark if it refused to cede its autonomous territory.
'We are very closely watching this rather dramatic development of the situation, which is, thank God, at the level of statements so far,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to Trump's comments.
'We are present in the Arctic zone, and we will continue to be present there,' he added. 'We are interested in preserving peace and stability in this zone and are ready to co-operate with any parties for this peace and stability.'
He also suggested the people of Greenland be consulted about what they wanted, pointing to Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions in 2022 based on referendums.
'We should show the same respect for the opinion of these people,' Peskov said. Western countries and Kyiv denounced Russia's annexations of four regions in Ukraine as illegal and the referendums as a sham.
Peskov said that US attempts to gain Greenland, that date back to the 19th Century, were a matter for the United States and Denmark, but he noted that Europe was reacting very cautiously to Trump's statements.
'Europe reacts very timidly and it is of course scary to react to Trump's words, therefore Europe reacts very cautiously, modestly, quietly, almost in a whisper,' Peskov said.
'We are very closely watching this rather dramatic development of the situation, which is, thank God, at the level of statements so far,' Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Putin's regime, said

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed surprise at Trump's comments about Greenland and Canada, saying European partners agreed that the inviolability of borders was a fundamental principle of international law.
When asked about Trump's remarks about the Panama Canal, which the United States built and owned before handing it to Panama in 1999, the Kremlin said it had heard the remarks but that they were for the United States and Panama to sort out.
'The only hands that control the canal are Panamanian and that's how it will continue to be,' Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha told reporters on Tuesday.
Greenland is part of the Danish realm along with the Faeroe Islands, another semi-autonomous territory, and has its own government and parliament.
Greenland's 57,000 residents got extensive home rule in 1979 but Denmark still handles foreign and defense policies, with an annual subsidy of $670 million.
Its indigenous people are not wealthy, and vehicles, restaurants, stores and basic services are few.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed Trump's intent to buy Greenland on Tuesday, saying that she did not believe that the US will use military or economic power to secure control over the island.
She also called the US Denmark's 'most important and closest ally' and repeated that she welcomed the US taking a greater interest in the Arctic region, but that it would 'have to be done in a way that is respectful of the Greenlandic people'.
Greenland's key strategic position
Trump ramped us his threats to take over Greenland as his son Don Jr. landed in the territory
Donald Trump Jr. visits Nuuk, Greenland, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Republican lawmakers are largely in lockstep with Trump's Greenland plans
'At the same time, it must be done in a way that allows Denmark and the United States to still cooperate in, among other things, NATO,' Frederiksen said.
This came after Trump posted a video of his private plane landing in Nuuk, the Arctic territory's capital, in a landscape of snow-capped peaks and fjords on Tuesday.
'Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland,' Trump wrote. 'The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!'
In a statement, Greenland's government said Donald Trump Jr.'s visit was taking place 'as a private individual' and not as an official visit, and Greenlandic representatives would not meet with him.
Don Jr. also posted a picture with locals wearing MAGA hats on X with the caption: 'Greenland loves America and Trump!!! Incredible people with an equally awesome reception.
'They just want to be able to utilize some of the incredible resources that they have and allow themselves, their country, and their kids to flourish.'
This it not the first time an American president suggested buying the island.
There were two failed attempts by U.S. to purchase it: President Harry Truman tried to buy it for $100 million in 1946 and the State Department inquired about it in 1867.

NATO's maritime show of force on Putin's doorstep: Alliance sends fleet of 10 ships to the Baltic to protect Europe's crucial undersea cables after sabotage attacks
In a stunning show of force, NATO has sent a fleet of ten ships to the Baltic to protect Europe's crucial undersea cables after a spate of sabotage attacks.
The ships are set to remain at sea until April and will be strategically positioned near energy and data cables in an effort to deter any attempts to destroy them.
The decision to bolster the alliance's engagement follows a number of disruptions in the Baltic Sea in recent months.
Finland is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the oil tanker Eagle S, a Russia-linked ship, after its anchor was suspected of causing damage to the Estlink-2 power cable on Christmas Day.
The vital cable takes electricity from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea.
The incident cut the electricity connection on Estlink 2 between EU and NATO states Finland and Estonia on December 25 and sparked uproar in Europe, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte vowing to 'enhance the military presence in the Baltic Sea.'
The UK-led collection of mainly Baltic and Nordic countries that join forces in defence, the Joint Expeditionary Force, announced Monday it will increase the monitoring of ship traffic by using AI.
It comes as Lithuania said Wednesday that it would bring forward increased security of a key electricity cable linking it to neighbouring Poland, citing the potential for sabotage.
Finnish Coast Guard vessel Uisko patrols near to oil tanker Eagle S (not in picture) anchored near the Kilpilahti port in Porvoo, on the Gulf of Finland on January 9, 2025
Estonia has begun naval patrols to protect an undersea cable supplying electricity from Finland following suspected sabotage of another one on Christmas Day
Finnish authorities announced on January 8, 2025 that they had banned the oil tanker Eagle S, suspected of belonging to the Russian 'ghost fleet' and of having caused damage to five submarine cables, from sailing due to 'serious faults'
The EU and NATO member, along with its Baltic neighbours Latvia and Estonia, is set to decouple from the Russian power grid next month, the culmination of decades-long efforts to reduce reliance on Moscow.
The government said the Public Security Service agency would begin protecting key facilities of the Lithuania-Poland energy connection, known as LitPol Link, starting January 15, instead of in April as previously planned.
'All possible scenarios of sabotage or diversion are being assessed, from cybersecurity to certain physical actions,' Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas told reporters after a government meeting.
Lithuania also maintains an electricity grid connection with Sweden via the Baltic Sea, which will come under Public Security Service protection in April as scheduled.
Sweden said Tuesday that its navy had recovered the anchor of the alleged Russian 'shadow fleet' tanker, which is suspected of damaging telecom and power cables on the floor of the Baltic Sea.
The EstLink 2 electricity cable and four telecom cables that lie on the seafloor linking Finland and Estonia went offline after suspected sabotage.
The incident occurred just weeks after other cables in the Baltic sea were severed in similar incidents that experts and politicians say are part of a hybrid war between Russia and Western countries.
Suspicion over the December 25 incident has fallen on the Eagle S, an oil tanker flying the Cook Islands flag and that's thought to be part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' - ships that carry Russian crude oil and petroleum products, which are embargoed over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
The Estlink 2 power cable in the Gulf of Finland was ruptured in suspected Russian interference
The Estlink 2 submarine cable was disconnected from the grid on December 25, just over a month after two telecommunications cables were severed in Swedish territorial waters in the Baltic Sea
Finnish authorities said on December 26 that they were investigating a Russian oil tanker, named Eagle S, that sailed from a Russian port over suspected 'sabotage'
Finnish police said on December 29 that they had found a drag trail stretching dozens of miles along the seabed.
Investigators suspect that the cables were damaged after the tanker's anchor was dragged over them.
Sweden last week sent a submarine rescue vessel to assist Finland in the investigation and on Tuesday said that the anchor had been recovered.
'The HMS Belos has located and lifted the anchor and handed it over to Finnish authorities,' Swedish navy spokesman Jimmie Adamsson told AFP.
Finland seized the tanker on December 28 and has banned eight crew members from leaving Finnish territory.
Finnish telecom operator Elisa said Monday that two of the four damaged telecom cables had been repaired.
The Estlink 2 power cable has not yet been repaired.
Energy and communications infrastructure in particular have been targeted as part of what experts and politicians call Russia's 'hybrid war' with Western countries.
The Baltic is surrounded by a number of NATO member states.
Two telecommunications cables were cut on November 17 and 18 in Swedish territorial waters, prompting German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to say he assumed it was sabotage.
A Chinese-flagged bulk carrier, the Yi Peng 3 is suspected of involvement.
…
A Reuters analysis of MarineTraffic data showed that the ship's coordinates corresponded to the time and place of the breaches.
'From the Swedish side we have had contact with the ship and contact with China and said that we want the ship to move towards Swedish waters,' Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a press conference at the time.
'We're not making any accusations but we seek clarity on what has happened,' Kristersson said.
China's foreign ministry said the communications channels with Sweden and other relevant parties were 'unobstructed', when asked about Sweden's request.
'I would like to reiterate China's consistent support working with all countries to maintain the security of international submarine cables and other infrastructure in accordance with international law,' ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters.
Western intelligence officials from multiple countries have said they are confident the Chinese ship caused the cuts to both cables.
But they expressed different views on whether these were accidents or could have been deliberate.
Pain from Ukraine.
Donald Trump Jr.’s visit was ‘staged,’ says Greenland lawmaker
“We know how they treat the Inuit in Alaska. Make that great before trying to invade us,” Pipaluk Lynge tells POLITICO.
A senior Greenlandic politician slammed Donald Trump Jr.’s visit to the island as “staged,” and warned the United States not to “invade us” given its historical treatment of Alaska’s indigenous people.
Pipaluk Lynge, an MP from Greenland’s largest party and chair of the parliamentary foreign and security policy committee, told POLITICO that Greenland wants “our own independence and democracy,” not to be beholden to the U.S.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s eldest son landed on the self-ruling Danish territory Tuesday and spent the day meeting with local residents, who he claimed were supportive of a U.S. takeover. But Lynge said it was a stunt.
“No journalists were allowed to interview him. It was all staged to make it seem like we — the Greenlandic people — were MAGA and love to be a part of the USA,” Lynge said.
Local media said that the Trump Jr. camp passed out MAGA hats to residents on the day of the visit, while video footage from the trip showed the president-elect talking to cap-wearing Greenlanders on speakerphone during a lunch event.
His welcome was not entirely warm, Lynge added. “People were curious, but some took pictures giving him [the] finger at the airport … Some wrote on Facebook: yankee go home,” she said.
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. denied that the visit was staged and called the criticism "ridiculous."
Trump declared Tuesday he would not exclude using economic or military force to gain control of Greenland or the Panama Canal, in a dramatic threat that would reshape the global security architecture.
“We know how they treat the Inuit in Alaska,” Lynge hit back. “Make that great before trying to invade us.”
Alaska Natives — part of the indigenous peoples who inhabit North America’s Arctic regions, like the Greenlandic Inuit — face a wide range of economic, education and health disparities, including some of the highest rates of alcoholism and suicide, and the lowest life expectancy in the U.S.
In the 1970s, U.S. Congress passed a law that directly gave Alaska Natives financial compensation and land rights, and their political influence has seen a boost in recent years. But they were also historically subjected to segregation, including boarding schools that sought to forcibly assimilate indigenous children, and Jim Crow laws.
As global powers seek to expand their reach and footprint in the Arctic, mineral-rich Greenland — which hosts a U.S. military base — is coveted for its strategic security and trade value.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who rebuffed Trump’s first proposal to purchase Greenland in 2019, calling it “absurd,” reiterated Tuesday that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
“There is a lot of support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future either,” she added.
As tensions mount, Frederiksen called a meeting of Danish party leaders Thursday to discuss Trump’s threats, according to AFP.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede said Tuesday the island’s focus was on independence.
“While others, including Danes and Americans, are entitled to their opinions, we should not be caught up in the hysteria and external pressures distract us from our path,” he said.
Donald Trump Jr. finds way to blame Ukraine for spread of Los Angeles wildfires
But firefighters said the real reasons were a lack of personnel to combat out-of-control blazes in Southern California.
Donald Trump Jr., eldest son of United States President-elect Donald Trump, dragged Ukraine into MAGA world’s furious mudslinging against California Democrats over the response to wildfires ravaging Los Angeles.
“Oh look of course The LA fire department donated a bunch of their supplies to Ukraine,” Trump Jr. wrote on X on Wednesday.
Los Angeles County Fire Department sent a plane full of surplus supplies like boots, hoses, nozzles, body armor and medication to Ukraine, where first responders work under threat of strikes from invading Russia — but the donation was in 2022.
This year, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone reported a lack of personnel and had to request help from nearby counties.
“There are 9,000 firefighters in Los Angeles County between the county’s fire department and 29 other fire agencies, which is still not enough to address all the fires in the region,” Maronne told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.
Fox News reported that firefighters were unable to contain fires raging since earlier this week because of strong winds, extreme dry weather, lack of visibility and outdated water supply systems in the region.
Donald Trump Sr. lashed out at California Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, calling him “Newscum” and the fires “virtually apocalyptic” in a Truth Social post that pointed the finger at state rules protecting endangered species for limiting the amount of water that gets sent south from Northern California.
It is a part of a yearslong blazing feud Trump has had with top Democrats in California — a solidly Blue state that is constantly at risk of deadly blazes — about forest management processes and wildfire containment plans.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, first responders were extinguishing fires and evacuating dozens of victims in Zaporizhzhia after Russia attacked the center of the city with several glide bombs, killing 13 and injuring more than 100 people on Wednesday.
The Trump camp has derided Ukraine, criticizing its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a salesman, and threatening to halt American military aid to Kyiv, while it has been resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion for almost three years.
Kyiv, for its part, is mourning with California, where thousands of people had to flee their homes due to raging wildfires and at least five people have died so far.
“Los Angeles. Condolences to the victims and relatives of those who died in the fires, as well as to all the American people,” said Andriy Yermak, head of Zelenskyy’s office, in a statement on Thursday.

Diplomacy Watch: Russia dumps on Trump team’s deal ideas
Moscow says it is less than enamored by NATO moratoriums and peacekeeper plans
President-elect Donald Trump has made Ukraine peace talks a focus of his foreign policy, previously saying he’ll get a Ukraine deal “within 24 hours” and readying his envoy Keith Kellogg for a fact finding/listening tour of Ukraine and European capitals first thing after inauguration.
But Russian officials don’t appear all together convinced by ideas that Trump and his team have been putting out in circulation, suggesting a steep hill to climb regarding Ukraine negotiations.
Namely, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov posits that some of these proposals, if implemented, will simply pass the war effort on to Europeans while failing to address the conflict’s root causes.
“Judging from numerous leaks and Donald Trump’s interview with Time magazine on December 12, [the Trump team’s] idea is to suspend hostilities along the line of contact and transfer responsibility for confrontation with Russia to the Europeans,” Lavrov said in an interview with Russian News Agency TASS.
“We are not happy, of course, with the proposals made by members of the Trump team to postpone Ukraine's admission to NATO for 20 years and to station British and European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.”
The idea of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine has reportedly been floated several times among the Trump team and European officials in recent months. “As long as Ukraine is not in NATO, this aspect can be considered,” Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky had said, while emphasizing NATO membership was the only way to ensure Ukraine’s security against future attacks from Russia.
According to Lavrov, Russia instead wants agreements “that would eliminate the root causes of the conflict and seal a mechanism precluding the possibility of their violation." Lavrov also said Russia is open to restoring relations, but the U.S. must make the first move since it cut them off at the start of the war.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration is only shelling out more Ukraine aid on its way out, announcing $5.9 billion in military assistance and budget support on December 30. This includes HAWK air defense munitions, Munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), Stinger missiles, and various ammunition packages.
“I’ve directed my Administration to continue surging as much assistance to Ukraine as quickly as possible,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “At my direction, the United States will continue to work relentlessly to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war over the remainder of my time in office.”
In other Ukraine war news this week:
As of January 1, Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom has halted gas supplies to Moldova amid a debt dispute between the two countries. Russia says Moldova owes $709 million; Moldova claims it owes $8.6 million, with former Energy Minister Victor Parlicov charging that "the Kremlin's real goal here is to destabilise Moldova and plunge it into chaos.” According to AP, Moldovans are bracing for possible energy shortages; the country has declared a state of emergency.
More broadly, Ukraine has halted Russian gas exports to Europe by refusing to renew relevant transit agreements, according to the New York Times. Ending an era of Russian dominance in the European gas market, Zelensky hailed the halt as “one of Moscow’s greatest defeats” on X. The European Commission says the EU is prepared for the expected change, yet European gas prices are already soaring in light of the halt. Hungary and Slovakia, which had relied on the now-closed route for nearly two-thirds of 2023’s gas demand, are likely to be among the most impacted by the change.
An Azerbaijan passenger plane crashed in Kazakhstan on Christmas day after rerouting from its original destination, Grozny in Chechnya, Russia, where it apparently came under fire from the ground. The crash killed the majority of passengers. In days since, how the plane was downed has become a source of controversy. Sources told Reuters that Russian air defenses downed the plane, with U.S. officials telling NBC the defense systems may have misidentified the plane amid a then-ongoing Ukrainian drone attack on the Grozny airport. Russia subsequently apologized for the incident taking place in Russian air space, but has not taken responsibility for it, angering Azerbaijani officials. Investigations by multiple countries are ongoing.

Putin's weapon of mass disruption: Finland parades enormous anchor 'used by oil tanker in Russian shadow fleet' to snap critical undersea cables on Baltic Sea bed
Finland has paraded the enormous anchor allegedly used by an oil tanker belonging to Russia's shadow fleet to snap several critical undersea cables on the bed of the Baltic Sea.
The anchor, presumed to belong to the Eagle S oil tanker, is being held by Finnish investigators after it was recovered from the Baltic Sea.
Finland is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the oil tanker Eagle S, a Russia-linked ship, after its anchor was suspected of causing damage to the Estlink-2 power cable on Christmas Day.
The Eagle S is thought to be part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' - ships that carry Russian crude oil and petroleum products, which are embargoed over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
Finnish police said on December 29 that they had found a drag trail stretching dozens of miles along the seabed.
Investigators suspect that the cables were damaged after the tanker's anchor was dragged over them.
The anchor (pictured), presumed to belong to the Eagle S oil tanker, is being held by Finnish investigators after it was recovered from the Baltic Sea
In a stunning show of force, NATO today sent a fleet of ten ships to the Baltic to protect Europe's crucial undersea cables after a spate of sabotage attacks.
The anchor was allegedly used to cut a critically important cable on the bottom of the Baltic Sea
The anchor belonged to the Eagle S, a Russian-linked oil tanker believed to be part of the Kremlin's Shadow Fleet
The ships are set to remain at sea until April and will be strategically positioned near energy and data cables in an effort to deter any attempts to destroy them.
It comes a week before Finland is set to host a summit of NATO countries bordering the Baltic Sea to discuss security in the region, as the alliance boosts its maritime presence following several subsea cable cuts.
The January 14 meeting in Helsinki will focus on 'measures required to secure the critical underwater infrastructure', a statement from the office of Finland's President Alexander Stubb said.
'The discussion will focus on strengthening of NATO's presence in the Baltic Sea and responding to the threat posed by Russia's shadow fleet.'
The 'shadow fleet' consists of ships that carry Russian crude oil and petroleum products embargoed over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
The often ageing vessels operate under dubious ownership or without proper insurance.
Among those due to attend the meeting are NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the leaders of Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden, and the executive vice-president of the European Commission Henna Virkkunen.
Finland's President Alexander Stubb and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal will co-host the meeting.
Finland became a NATO member in 2023, dropping decades of military non-alignment after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
